Cancer

When, over a period of time, toxins collect at the site of a particular organ—it may result in fatal growth in its surrounding cells. The groups of cells accumulate and produce swelling at the site. Nearby cells and tissues are also affected if the toxins are not removed as the diseased cells are circulated to other parts of the body through the blood stream.

Treatment of cancer by Ayurveda is very in-depth and holistic in its approach. Ayurveda treats the disease according to the specific nature of the patient, the aggravated body energies involved and the body tissues that are affected. Treatment does not only focus on the area of the malignancy but on the entire system, as the whole organism must be returned to harmony for the disease to be treated permanently and not recur elsewhere. The body must be purified of the toxins that cause the cells to attack the body. Treatment includes the administration of blood cleansing herbs along with the adoption of a detoxifying diet. Circulatory stimulant herbs are also prescribed to promote circulation, shift stagnation of the blood, increase the efficient elimination of toxins and assist in healing the tissues. Immunity restoring herbs and minerals are given to boost the strength of debilitated patients.

A crucial part of treatment is relaxation of the mind. Suppression of emotion or emotional stagnation is a significant causative factor and obstacle to effective treatment of this condition. The patient needs to heal themselves at the very deepest level of their individuality. Meditation, counseling, yoga, pranayama and the studying of spiritual philosophy are all recommended for support in this aspect of personal healing.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

According to Ayurveda, this condition is due to the imbalance of certain body energies. When toxins are produced by poor digestion and accumulate in the various body channels, the deep tissues do not receive proper nourishment, since the body ceases to produce healthy nutrients. The contamination and undernourishment of body tissues causes the excessive tiredness and weak immunity that is characteristic of this disorder.

The main focus of Ayurvedic treatment is the balance of the disturbed body energy and strengthening of the muscles and nervous system. Toxins are cleansed from the body channels and digestion is improved to prevent the recurrence of their accumulation. Stress reducing techniques such as yoga, pranayama and meditation are also recommended, in addition to diet and lifestyle adjustments to remove the causative factors.

AIDS

According to Ayurveda, AIDS is primarily a disease of low ojas (immunity), the vital sap of the body. Ojas provides the physical and mental strength to resist disease. With a lowered immune system the body is susceptible to a host of opportune infections and disorders. There are millions of bacteria and viruses in our environment, many of which are contagious, that the body successfully fights off everyday. But in a condition of low ojas or immunity level, these organisms are allowed to remain in the body, reproduce and cause disease. Most of the symptoms associated with AIDS are similar to a disease known in Ayurveda as ojaskshaya and detailed etiology and treatment methods are available.

Ineffective metabolism of food produces toxins that pollute the system and reduce body immunity (ojas). Stress, worry, overwork and excessive sexual indulgence also decrease ojas. If this diminished state of vitality is allowed to continue, coupled with high-risk exposure to infection, the body stands no chance of resisting disease. When all seven dhatus or body tissues are deteriorated and ojas is reduced—disorders symptomatic of AIDS can occur.

Ayurveda has many highly effective therapies for AIDS. There is a branch of Ayurveda known as rasayana, which specifically deals with increasing immunity and vitality through the use of various herbs, minerals and Ayurvedic techniques and practices. The line of treatment aims at the relief of current symptoms while addressing the underlying cause. After initial detoxification, the strength, immunity and vitality of the patient are increased through rasayanic therapies, which after a period of time can bring about a complete cure.

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis or MS is an autoimmune disease in which the insulation of the nerve cell fibers of the brain and spinal cord are destroyed, causing various disturbances of the central nervous system. Symptoms depend on the area of nerve deterioration and include weakness or loss of control of one or more limbs, recurrent facial palsy and disturbance in vision.

In Ayurveda, this is condition is seen as a body energy disorder. Improper digestion leads to the formation of toxins and the blockage of the minute channels of the body. These blockages obstruct the movement of certain body energies, giving rise to neuro-muscular disorders.

Ayurvedic treatment consists of the elimination of toxins and restoration of digestive fire with herbal formulas. Proper diet and regimen are also advised in addition to the prescription of nerve tonics, to restore the function of the nervous system.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus or SLE is a chronic rheumatic disease that affects joints, muscles and many other parts of the body. It is an autoimmune disease, where the immune system attacks normal tissues causing chronic inflammation.

In Ayurveda, this is considered a chronic disease caused mainly by the imbalance of certain body energies. This disease affects the joints and muscles first, and reduces immunity causing degeneration of the body tissues. When these tissues deteriorate, and strength and immunity is reduced below a certain point—the body cannot fight the disease and an autoimmune disorder can occur, which can then spread to different systems in the body.

The primary aim of Ayurveda, when treating this kind of disorder, is to restore immunity so that the body can fight the disease naturally. Ayurveda focuses on the person not the pathogen, restoring strength and vitality to the immune system and the body before attacking the disease causing factors.

The line of treatment in this disease is to balance disturbed body energies, eliminate the toxins in the body that are causing the deterioration of the tissues and stimulate the digestive fire to prevent the further accumulation of toxins. The function of the immune system is then restored and strengthened too.
