Epilepsies
( Apasmaram )
Epilepsy
refers to a disorder in which the person has a tendency to have
seizures or fits due to abnormal electrical activity of the brain.
Fits may appear at birth due to problems during delivery or be
caused by tumors, head injury or infections of the brain.
Ayurveda
categorizes epilepsy into four types, depending on which particular
body energies are vitiated. The main objective of the Ayurvedic
treatment is to strengthen the heart and restore the proper function
of the nervous system. Nourishing herbs with a tonic effect are
prescribed along with diet and lifestyle adjustments that emphasize
a light easily digestible diet and avoidance of mental strain.
Parkinson’s
Disease
Parkinson's
disease is caused by the very gradual deterioration of nerve junctions,
popularly known as ganglia. These junctions are situated at the
base of the brain and affect muscle control and movements of the
body. Tremors begin in a hand or limb when the muscles are at
rest.
Digestive
herbs, in conjunction with nerve tonics are administered to restore
digestive function both in the gastro intestinal tract and at
a cellular level. Specific diets and regimen are advised.
Headache
Headache
is probably the most common complaint. According to Ayurveda,
the causative factors may include high blood pressure, insomnia,
overwork, emotional strain constipation, sinusitis and migraine.
The headache may be accompanied with watering of the eyes, bleeding
from the nose or giddiness depending on the body energy that is
aggravated.
Ayurvedic
treatment does not focus on simply alleviating the headache but
aims at treating the root cause. Improper digestion is generally
the fundamental problem that causes toxins to accumulate in the
body and causes obstruction in the minute channels of the body.
Herbal preparations are used to balance aggravated body energies
and digestive function is restored.
Multiple
Sclerosis
Multiple
sclerosis or MS is an autoimmune disease in which the insulation
of the nerve cell fibers of the brain and spinal cord are destroyed
leading to various disturbances of the central nervous system.
Symptoms depend on the area of nerve deterioration and include
weakness or loss of control of one or more limbs, recurrent facial
palsy and disturbance in vision.
According
to Ayurveda, this is caused by improper digestion, which leads
to the formation of toxins and the blockage of the minute channels
of the body. These blockages give rise to neuro-muscular disorders.
Ayurvedic
treatment consists of the elimination of toxins and restoration
of digestive fire with herbal formulas. Special diet and regimen
is advised in addition to the prescription of nerve tonics to
restore the function of the nervous system.
Migraine
This
type of headache is characterized by recurring bouts of attacks.
Often the pain is felt on one side of the head only and the patient
feels well in between the attacks. Excessive worry, anxiety and
poor digestion are usually the primary causative factors in this
condition.
According
to Ayurveda, improper digestion produces toxins causing obstruction
of body channels. This obstruction results in intense head pain.
Ayurvedic treatment involves the administration of herbal preparations
to restore digestive function along with advice on dietary and
lifestyle adjustments. Nasal drops may also be administered to
nourish the cranial nerves.
Sciatica
Sciatica
is a persistent pain starting from the lumbar region, spreading
down the legs, along the path of the sciatic nerve. Causative
factors include ruptured vertebral discs, inflammation of the
sciatic nerve and fear of change.
According
to Ayurveda this is caused by an impaired digestion. This causes
the build up of toxins that accumulate in the minute channels
of the body.
Ayurvedic
treatment consists of cleansing herbs to eliminate the toxic build
up, followed by digestive herbs that restore proper digestion.
Toning and demulcent herbs are also prescribed to nourish the
nervous system and alleviate imbalanced body energies. Medicated
oils may also be applied to soothe the sciatic nerve.
Poliomyelitis
Poliomyelitis
is an acute viral infection affecting various parts of the central
nervous system and generally affects children under the age of
five. Symptoms may first appear as gastro-intestinal and respiratory
disturbances with fever and become more aggravated between the
second and fifth day with paralysis of the
ower
limbs.
Ayurvedic
treatment is concerned with cleansing body channels, restoring
proper digestion and nourishing body tissues and pacifying imbalanced
body energies. This is achieved through prescription of cleansing
herbal formulas and adjustments to diet and lifestyle. Nourishing
herbs are also administered to strengthen the nervous system.
Fatigue
Fatigue
is characterized by a persistent sense of tiredness, either physically
or psychologically. It may be the result of excessive and prolonged
periods of work or due to impaired or sluggish digestion. Symptoms
include, body ache, heaviness and lethargy. Ayurvedic treatment
concentrates on the restoration of proper digestion. If digestion
is efficient, the food we eat is converted into nutrients that
nourish all the tissues in the body.
Ayurvedic
treatment includes cleansing of the toxins from the body channels
with eliminative herbs, digestive herbs to restore digestive fire,
immune boosting herbal formulas and nourishing tonics to strengthen
the nervous system.
