Influenza
Influenza is similar to the common cold, but its symptoms are
more severe and pronounced. Typical symptoms include runny nose,
blocked sinuses, sore throat, cough, fever, aching muscles and
headache.
Ayurvedic
treatment consists of eliminating the aggravated body energies,
expelling excess mucus, restoring peripheral circulation, strengthening
digestion and boosting immunity.
Bronchitis
This
condition is an acute inflammation of the trachea and bronchi
of the lungs resulting in the accumulation and discharge of phlegm
or sputum. Symptoms may include tightness around the chest, difficulty
in breathing, slight fever and loss of appetite. Ayurveda calls
this disease kasa roga and considers it to be primarily due to
poor digestion.
Ayurvedic
treatment is aimed at simultaneously correcting lung and stomach
functions. Herbs are given to ease troubled breathing and expel
phlegm. At the same time, Ayurvedic digestive formulas are prescribed
for increasing the digestive fire in order to kill pathogens.
Allergic
Rhinitis/ Hay Fever
Hay
fever is caused by an allergic reaction to pollen. It is characterized
by headache, itchy eyes and throat, runny nose with watery discharge,
and sneezing. In Ayurveda such allergies are thought of as autoimmune
disorders and are due to hypersensitivity of the nervous system.
Treatment
involves clearing the sinuses and expelling phlegm, alleviating
the relevant dosha and detoxification. To permanently resolve
this disorder dietary and lifestyle adjustments may be necessary
in addition to the strengthening of the immune system.
Sinusitis
Sinusitis
is a condition where the sinuses are blocked with mucus and become
inflamed. Symptoms include congestion, severe headache and impaired
eyesight. Ayurvedic treatment involves liquefying and expelling
aggravated body energies with the use of certain Ayurvedic herbs
and diet as well as nasal therapies and applications.
Bronchial
Asthma
Asthma
is characterized by constriction of the small bronchial tubes
due to swelling or accumulation of phlegm. Symptoms include difficulty
in breathing, tightness across the chest and wheezing. With the
rising levels of pollution and tendency towards stressful lifestyles,
the number of people suffering this disease is escalating. Ayurveda
regards asthma as a disorder caused by impaired digestion. Preliminary
symptoms include disorders such as constipation and indigestion.
This dysfunction in the digestive process is the cause of the
hypersensitivity to certain substances, such as dust and pollen
that triggers the asthma attacks.
Ayurvedic
treatment focuses on restoring digestion with herbal preparations
and advises supporting diet and lifestyle changes. Ayurvedic tonics
are also administered to build up the strength of the lungs.
Eosinophilia
This
is the formation and accumulation of an abnormally large number
of eosinophils in the blood. This condition is characterized chiefly
by cough, paroxysms of dyspnoea, fever, malaise, loss of appetite,
loss of weight and pain in the chest. Asthmatic bronchitis, prolonged
expiration, spleen enlargement, lymphadenopathy, and haemoptysis
may occur as complications if eosinophillia is not treated correctly.
In Ayurveda this condition can be compared to swas roga.
Ayurvedic
treatment involves detoxifying the accumulated phlegm from the
system and preventing further accumulation. The immunity of the
respiratory system is then increased using rejuvenating Ayurvedic
herbs.
Pleurisy
The
inflammation of the membrane of the lungs is known as pleurisy.
Symptoms include pain in the chest, coughing, difficulty in breathing,
high temperature and fluid accumulation. In Ayurveda, this condition
is called parshwashula.
Ayurvedic
treatment includes certain Ayurvedic therapies, herbs and diet
changes. The treatment also addresses digestion to achieve a permanent
cure.
