Acne & Pimples

Acne is a very common problem that mainly affects teenagers. It is a skin complaint in which spots, black heads and pimples appear on the face, neck and body. During puberty, hormonal changes stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce larger quantities of sebum making the skin greasier and more prone to infection.

Ayurveda considers this primarily caused by poor digestion. Toxins become deposited in the blood and tissues causing imbalance in hormonal function. Treatment consists of purifying the body of toxins and restoring proper digestion. Diet and lifestyle adjustments are also advised to remove the causative factors and prevent reoccurrence of the disorder.

Urticaria/Hives

Urticaria or hives is characterized by the presence of elevated red or pale patches on the skin, which may also be itchy. Excessive thirst, anorexia, heaviness or a burning sensation are further symptoms. Allergens present in food, exposure to heat or cold, jaundice, intestinal worms, antibiotics, antihypertensives, and codeine are some of the causative factors.

According to Ayurveda the primary cause is inefficient digestion. Ama or toxins are produced in the body when the digestive fire is low in either the digestive tract or at a cellular level. This toxic element is deposited in the minute channels of the body, effecting the immunity and balance of the body energies.

Treatment consists of purification of the body of toxins with herbal preparations. Administration of digestive herbs restores the digestive fire and oils may be applied to nourish and tone the skin.
